Mowbray Maternity Hospital (MMH) is the largest dedicated maternity hospital in South Africa and the hub of the Cape Town Metro West Maternal and Neonatal service. In a country where women and children are particularly vulnerable, MMH provides exceptional care to pregnant women and newborn babies.
With over 800 babies born every month, the Hospital is very busy yet maintains a proud history of safe maternal and newborn care. A healthy pregnancy, birth, and the first two years of life set a child on the path to fulfil their full potential. This legacy is made possible by our dedicated and caring staff.

- 132 obstetric beds and 73 neonatal beds
- Nearly 400 staff members
- Approximately 10,000 deliveries annually
- Full-time specialist neonatologists, paediatric cardiologist, and obstetricians
- Accredited Mother Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (MBFHI) facility
- Teaching platform for University of Cape Town Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Western Cape, CPUT, University of Stellenbosch and the Western Cape College of Nursing
MMH is a level 2 referral hospital providing specialised maternal and neonatal care to the Cape Town Metro West region, including four Midwife Obstetric Units (Gugulethu, Hanover Park, Mitchells Plain, Retreat) and referral hospitals (False Bay and Mitchells Plain District Hospital).
Bookings must be made at local Midwife Obstetric Units (MOUs) or BANC clinics. All patients referred into MMH will require proof of identity and address before a folder is opened.
Our Services
MMH is a Level 2 referral hospital, providing antenatal care to medium-risk patients and labour & delivery support.

Visitor Information
Visiting Hours
- 10:00–11:00 (Partners only)
- 15:00–16:30
- 19:00–20:30
- Labour Suite: designated birth partner always allowed
- Neonatal Unit: parents unrestricted; grandparents/siblings by arrangement
Visitor Numbers
- Limited to immediate family in high-care units
- NICU: Parents encouraged for Kangaroo Mother Care; other visitors by arrangement
Health & Safety
- Postpone visits if unwell
- Hand sanitisation required
- Masks may be requested
