Antenatal care, labour and delivery
Mowbray Maternity Hospital (MMH) is a Level 2 referral hospital, managing pregnancy complications referred from MOUs and district hospitals. Bookings must be made at local Midwife obstetric units (MOU) or BANC clinics. All patients referred into MMH will require proof of identity and address before a folder is opened.
Antenatal Care
There is a daily antenatal clinic (Monday to Friday) and an antenatal ward where patients with complications are admitted for investigation and further care.
Women are referred for antenatal care from the designated MOUs and district hospitals for specific indications, including previous caesarean sections, previous pregnancy losses, impaired glucose tolerance, increased weight, anaemia.
Antenatal Services:
- High risk antenatal care
- Low risk antenatal care from 36 weeks gestation (area patients only)
- Voluntary Testing program (HIV)
- Ultrasound
- Dietetics
- Social work – on appointment basis
Postnatal Services:
We offer postnatal care to women in our immediate catchment area (Mowbray, Rondebosch, Rosebank, Newlands and Claremont).
Labour & Delivery
Patients are referred and linked to CBS and the hospital’s 24 hour emergency and labour ward.
We see labour as one of the most exciting experiences for a woman. MMH prides itself in being mother-and-baby friendly. Mobilisation in labour is encouraged where possible and devices such as birthing balls are available to aid the experience. Labour companions are encouraged. A limited epidural service is available.
The labour ward consists of three sections: an admission suite, an early labour and induction room, and a labour and delivery room. This helps to streamline care. Theatres are available 24 hours a day for caesarean sections and surgical management of other complications. Early bonding and breastfeeding are priorities.
Even when there are complications and extra medical care is needed, we strive to optimise patient experience without compromising safety.

- No bookings are done at the facility.
- Please book at your nearest Basic Antenatal Care Clinic (BANC) site.
- All patients referred to MMH from a BANC site will require proof of address before a folder is opened.
